Northern forces retook Abyei yesterday after Southern forces attacked. The oil-rich region of Sudan was left out of the referendum in January. Both sides refuse to give in.
The fighting is not new, however this latest outbreak is further evidence that neither side is backing down any time soon, and most likely the north will not withdraw again without force.
(I should also take this moment to point out that I am very, very far away from Abyei. As in, days and days driving away. Sort of the equivalent of something happening in California when you’re in Chicago.)
